SuperATV 8-Inch Portal Gear Lift for the Can-Am Defender HD9

SuperATV 8 inch portal gear lift hub boxes for Can-Am Defender HD9

A customer asked us last month what it takes to make a Defender HD9 crawl through the kind of bottoms that swallow most side-by-sides. The honest answer is clearance and gearing, and nothing delivers both in one package like a portal gear lift.

The SuperATV Can-Am Defender HD9 8″ Portal Gear Lift, available at Wild Boar ATV Parts, bolts a gearbox at each wheel that raises the hub and multiplies torque at the same time.

How portals change a Defender

A portal box drops the output down below the axle centerline. That lifts the whole machine higher without stretching your suspension angles the way a tall bracket lift does. The gears inside the box also add reduction, so the Defender can turn big tires without straining the clutch or belt. For a heavy work machine like the HD9, that reduction is what keeps it moving in thick mud and on steep climbs.

Built around strong gears

SuperATV uses precision-ground gears made from 9310 alloy billet steel, and this kit uses a dual idler gear configuration to maximize strength. Power travels through a 1.5-inch diameter drive shaft made of 4340 hardened steel. Housings are available in billet or cast aluminum, so you can choose the option that fits your build.

What comes in the kit

  • Four assembled portal hub boxes with 9310 gears, seals, output shafts and gaskets
  • Four universal hubs and four backing plates
  • Extended brake lines
  • All necessary hardware

The extended brake lines matter. Once the hub moves down and out, stock lines will not reach without stretching.

Keep in mind that a portal lift adds parts that need attention. Each hub box holds gear oil, and it is smart to check it after deep water or long, hard days in the mud. Riders who stay on top of that simple maintenance tend to get years of service from their portals, even on a Defender that works every day.

Plan the rest of the build

SuperATV strongly recommends running a Big Lift Kit or 2-inch forward offset A-arms with this portal lift. Eight inches of portal is a lot of change, and those parts help the geometry work with it. Most riders who go this route are also planning a big tire upgrade, so think about wheels, tires and axles as one project instead of piecemeal. Confirm your Defender model and year before you order, and call the Wild Boar team at 850-912-4350 if you want help mapping out the full setup on your HD9.
